Random Thought

"Writing this book review is probably going to be one of the funniest things I ever do, simply because the book is a crack up. By crack up I don't by any means think the book is worthless. I mean it is by far the funniest piece of literature I have ever read!".

Crazily I started my book review article with a "random thought". I thought (randomly of course) that starting the review like this was quite suitable as all throughout the book Texas Hold'em; Tony Korfman gives his random thoughts (I feel sorry for his wife). This book and reading this funny man of pokers "random thoughts" is strangely addictive. Be warned though so is his behaviour!

Since finalising this awesome book I now swear more, curse more, tease more, laugh more and write down my thoughts randomly like a crazy lunatic. Ok, really i don't! But thats what Tony Korfman would say, well at least I think he would. If he wouldn't say that then he is an idiot when it comes to writing book reviews about his own book!

Random Thought

"I just got caught out by 40,000 readers telling tales and calling someone an idiot like Phil Hellmuth would (or Tony Korfman). I am suing Tony Korfman for this, he has caused the ruin of my reputation!"

Readers; as wonderful as the blog you are reading is (for those who have forgotten due to age it is called Poker Down Under and Every Where Else or HotAussieChick blogspot), Tony Korfman's Texas Hold'em is all of the above plus more. Damn! I have lied again, it isnt all of the above, thats my rattling. It is however hillarious, entertaining, low cost (thats the best part) stupid, good, and at times has some good strategy. Don't get me wrong though the book doesnt appear in any way to be a strategy book. Actually, it does in some ways; a lot of ways. Tony Korfman tells it how it is. If that includes calling someone a Pri_k or saying the word F_ck, then he does. In saying that; if you do happen to be in that very old age category and have a pace maker (I have nothing against old people for the record) then I give you a WARNING -

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK IT WILL KILL YOU!

For anyone that isnt in that category and wishes the read a poker book that isnt going to send them to sleep. But this book now! It is USD$20 available at www.pokergas.com (where you will get a taste of whats in it) and comes with a DVD set so you dont actually have to read it.

Random Thought

"The best $20 you could spend this week is purchasing from Tony Korfman! You get a 389 page book, 12 CD's and the poker laugh of your life! This purchase is specifically suited to those who have lost all thier money playing poker and have had thier electrcity turned off - you can hear on the CD's rather then try reading this book in the dark. Oh My Goodness! I have mucked this review up again! For those who are as silly as me you need power to listen to CD's too!

No more random thoughts from me, my book review is over. Buy the damn thing for crying out loud you wont be dissapointed!

Women at the World Series of Poker 2010 My Winning Tips & My Feminine Poker Thoughts

Today I find myself laying around and day dreaming. I have been thinking of my fellow women in poker, the WSOP and have also had deep thoughts about my friends and teams that I think have a really good chance this year. I thought my laying around day dreaming picture would be suitable for such a post to help you get the picture LOL. Let's start with me re-capping my thoughts on women and the WSOP.

There has been much speculation about 2010 being the year of women in poker and I have got to say I have been some what impressed by the performance of many ladies this year! There was a comment made by an absolute imbocile which has me writing this blog post on women. He said "A woman won't win a bracelet at the WSOP even if they are the only entrant - women suck at poker." The guy has my attention! Obviously! Comments anyone?

Here's my comment to the guy who thinks he knows everything. "You mate, are a fool! Let's start with the fact that there will definietly be one women that wins a bracelet and I won't be argued with on that. Infact, I am willing to make a wager bigger then I ever have before! You have no clue what you are talking about, obviously a lady will win a bracelet..... In the ladies event durrrrr!!!!!!" (I was laughing so hard as I thought this) Maybe there will not be 3 winners; but there WILL be at least one.

Anyway, events are underway and it's getting very exciting! If I had to pick a female that would win a bracelet beyond the ladies event it would be Annette Obrestad; although such pressure could surcome her. I guess everyone is expecting a big performance from her. I think an unknown women will cash too. Actually I HOPE not think. I want to see another last lady standing; one we don't know of as yet. It would be a fabulous addition to the years events. A new poker queen on a throne to join the current ones.

So just a quick re-cap on women in poker leading up to the tournaments of tournaments the WSOP.

We had Annette Obrestad win an Aussie Millions Gold ring to be the first sole woman.
We had Annie Duke take down NBC heads up
Liv Boeree win EPT San Remo
Vanessa Selbst has won the 2010 PokerStars North American Poker Tour

There have been many small wins too that people havn't noticed. Including ones in the WSOP circuit events. The likes of the CPT (canadian poker tour) see's a lady Mary Gabriel in 2nd spot too.

There have been 2 women signed as team pro's with online poker rooms (that I know of off the top of my head). Lacey Jones became the face of the CPT. Womens poker hour has re-started with Amy Zupko and Chess Bitch Jennifer Shahade and in Australia Kirsty Brew showing that she can come back to win an event from less then the cost of a big blind with 3 tables to go! (poker network magazine editor).

There has been a ton of publicity directed at women too. "Year of the women", "Women wins event". You get the hint; I think it already is the year of the women of poker, with or without an additional bracelet win beyond the ladies tournament at the WSOP.

In addition to all of this we have Marsha Waggoner being the only inductee for the year and first female inducted into the Australian Poker Hall of Fame. The USLPC (US Ladies Poker Championship) coming up. The Maven Awards for Women in Poker in it's Inagrual year (with some fine candidates I must add) and much, much, more! I could type all day, but I won't! You get the hint.

I am now going to sit back and watch and cheer on the ladies of the felt; and also my team mates from Team FeltStars at the WSOP. I will also be cheering on team Shulman again and are hoping to see them hit the final table or even take down another bracelet. Of course, I will also be cheering on all my friends and fellow Aussies when I see them doing well. Until next years WSOP when there will be one more lady added to the felt in Vegas - me!

Just to prove I pre thought of it, in the case that it may happen. I pick that my mate Sorel Mizzi will final table the WSOP and or win a bracelet. I think he is ready to bash his way through. Good Luck to Huggy also!

Equilibrium Push Strategy (Including Nash Charts)

A poker based television show in Australia has sent many viewers on the search of articles titled “The Equilibrium Pushing Strategy”. I decided I would go and do just that myself, see what information was available on this rarely talked about poker strategy (amongst beginners). For extremely skilled players I found the information suitable. For the beginners, the word equilibrium is enough to turn them off the subject as is the content available on it. I have decided to write about this subject for you, in terms easy to understand (and the very basics of the strategy) so that hopefully you will read past the title.

Let's first define the word equilibrium. It is a stable situation in which forces cancel one another. In cancelling one another they are EQUAL. A condition in which all acting influences are cancelled by others, resulting in a stable, balanced, or unchanging system. The word equilibrium is used beyond poker tables to even emergency rooms in hospitals where drugs can be used to counteract the effect of other drugs.

Let's now refer this to a heads-up poker situation. The poker player with the lowest chip stack is going to want exactly what is written above – no change to it, unless the change is UP! The same applies to the biggest stack in theory, the biggest stacked player doesn't want the small stack gaining, only themselves. In the situation both players used a balancing technique by playing high ranked hands and pushing the other to fold, in the end the smallest stack would blind out . Let me explain why.

Above is a table called the Heads-Up Push / Fold Nash Equilibrium, along with a call table. The table’s are what the article is about. Lets say that both the short and large stacked heads-up players push with pocket pairs (aqua) causing folds by their opponent not once but over and over again the short stack would eventually blind out. Its as simple as that.

There are many complicated equations one can examine regarding this strategy. There is a lot of in-depth information. My main point to this article is to get the message across that learning the push and call charts is a must; particularly in a heads up poker situation. If not you can use another strategy (for live) which I will discuss at a later date. If playing online having these charts next to you is a very good idea!

I am guessing prior to reading the charts there is no way that many of you would push with certain hands such as pushing with 7/9os with just 5 blinds left. This is why having the chart handy for a mathematical reference is a must.

The above charts are widely used and very straight forward. Again, further in-depth and complicated equations and knowledge do apply. This is just a basis to give beginners an understanding.

In addition you must always must make sure to pay full attention to you opponents tells in-case of trap and steal situations. The graphs are a great guide to kicking butt though.

Remember that the numbers on the charts are related to the amount of blinds you have left and the colours the hand types and equilibrium NASH away!

Remember to use this for tournaments not cash!
