Las Vegas a Second Home and a Beating Heart

In just five days time I am bound for Las Vegas yet again with my Las Vegas Advisor coupon book and diamond members benefits tightly in my hand. To say that Las Vegas has become a second home would be a correct statement, this is my third trip in just months, the first two for the World Series of Poker and this trip for some business talks as well as a catch-up with my close friends while I am there. So what is it that makes Las Vegas a place to return to, a place to call home and what are you missing out on by not going there? What does Las Vegas mean for this ordinary Aussie Gal?

For starters, Las Vegas is one of the friendliest cities I have ever been to. As I make that statement, I make it as a person that has a lot of friends that live there, frequent there and visit there. Just before I started writing this post, as an example, I chatted to a friend from Australia who will also be there at the same time, clearly its their second home also, they have planted their feet and have a little condo which they can stay in. The person I will be staying with, my second mother, (Marsha Waggoner) was once just like me (no doubt) and is an Australian woman that has immigrated. There are also beautiful people in the poker industry I simply adore that are from the USA and Canada that now live there. It really is like going to a city full of friends and like minded people in the poker and gaming industry, though strangers are also as friendly as can be!

Going to Las Vegas is cheaper for me than staying home and I also eat better! I know it is hard to believe but it is! Not only do I have my coupon book in my hand that I mention above (from Las Vegas Advisor) but food in the supermarket is cheaper and drinks most definitely are! I also eat like a queen as apposed to my bangers and mash (sausages and vegetables) that I frequently eat in Australia. I also dont gamble, not gambling means the city cant take my money. Other people may be able to if I play cash games of poker but not the city. Here in Australia there is so little for me to do I spend money to go out. I spend nothing in Las Vegas! $20 here and there for a show or a meal.

Las Vegas has the warmth my body so greatly needs and the water for my mind. As I sit here freezing with aching joints and no option to hit the pool I get so very anxious and depressed. I dont know that a day will ever arrive when I am in Vegas when I am going to freeze, ache or not be able to swim. Being an Aussie, a woman and an Aquarius I simply crave the sun and the water and so does my physical body, its not just a mental thing. In fact, it isnt just about craving, it is about needing. I dont say i need things lightly so this means a lot.

Las Vegas has a bit of everything! If you feel like checking out nature, you can see it. If you want to go to a casino or club and experience epic nightlife its your oyster. If you want to dine its the place to go with so many different foods and restaurants you simply cant go wrong. If on the other hand you wish to relax there is no better place on earth. When it comes to gambling and of course poker, you have that option and if its your "thing" where else would you want to be? Vegas has a lot to offer for every personality type on earth.

At just $900AUD return (round trip) from Sydney, Las Vegas is as cheap to frequent as the sunshine coast, gold coast, surfers paradise, anywhere in Australia - again though, its cheaper when it comes to accommodation, food and beverages. You need to really shop hard for tickets and take the long haul and tiring journey but its worth it! Traveling to Vegas may as well be traveling to another Aussie state, you can just add a few hours travel.

With all of this said I have discovered that home isnt a place or where the heart is, home is a person, home is people, your type of people. With grown kids (except one) and infrequent contact with my family and friends in Australia as apposed to my frequent contact for hours a day with my best friend in Las Vegas, my person is there, my heart is there and my second home is now there, or is it my home? I write with utter confusion in relation to this. What I do know is making Las Vegas a home, second home or a bi monthly holiday target is most likely. I had a target to move to Vegas in 2021, I will be most definitely spending a lot of time there between now and three years time!

A wise man once told me that humans always want what they can not have. They assumed I wanted a piece of Las Vegas as it could never be something I could obtain. I hope they read this blog post and understand that this IS me we are talking about and that there is nothing I wont go after and get (unless we were talking people who do not want me in return) EVER! I have my business boots, mom boots, lady boots and Vegas boots on and Vegas, I am coming for you no matter how long it takes Las Vegas! Not only am I coming for the pre 2021 move "experience" but I am coming to make more friends, business acquaintances & to warm my heart, love deeply & fill the lonely gap from being away from my second home too long, my person.

My Poker Life Rut My Own Self Ruin My Cure & Prevention

As I sit on my bed, laptop charged ready to partner with me as my nightly soul mate I take a good hard look around and I see something that has been an oversight yet a consistent for many years of my life. It is my poker life rut and it is not without fault of my own, it is completely preventable yet causes such ruin. Maybe I am different to most poker players or traveling reporters and other moms or maybe all of you can empathize with the overwhelming work load and feelings of laziness when I, in reality, are probably completely normal. Either way, being in a rut and self ruining isn’t cool and when it comes to this hot mess, it runs deep – it runs as far as my poor filing of pictures and documents on my computer systems to the blanket that still hangs on the line two weeks after I washed it.

Life itself can become a rut, a repetitive, tireless rut. You can travel, love, laugh and enjoy it but at the end of the day you are you and your habitual living ways usually remain the same. Many get up and brew coffee as they open their smart phones to read their feeds and news, they follow this by working from home remotely on projects assigned to them or head to an office, or casino, when the time suits, all of course after they smartly rinse their coffee cup and place it neatly on the sink. Life in the poker industry as a female, a mom, a daughter, wife and at times a girlfriend causes a different kind of rut. It causes an unorganized, chaotic, stressful rut that is like a black hole that one cannot escape. It is much like having habitual poor poker habits that you can’t seem to cease, it’s a nightmare and though, as mentioned, preventable. Sometimes a prevention needs a cure first. Most days I truly look around and listen and I feel like a walking, talking sitcom. A profession change isn’t out of the question to be honest, a profession change to an actress in an real life sitcom.

I was always taught that a clean work-space is what is needed for optimum success. So is a clear mind. The same applies to poker both online and live and to a working mother. As I sit surrounded by my suitcases that haven’t been unpacked from my last trip away (I returned over a month ago), my bathroom covered in makeup containers and a washing pile the size of mount Everest I wonder how there is any success in my life at all. I have a walk-in wardrobe but appear to use the walk on wardrobe more for clothing storage lately (the floor). I suppose you could say that my rut has peaked to ruin. My rut is large at the moment and mine doesn’t include the morning coffee and feed read, its more along the lines of catch up really quickly on emails as I open my eyes before peeing, diving back into bed and plummeting away on my laptop keyboard. Meanwhile my social and family world collapses around me, it becomes ruin. The domino effect is of course an impact on poker and writing and again, I am diving back into bed and typing on my keyboard doing the wash, rinse and repeat cycle – the rut.

So, my cure is to step away from poker, writing and anything else that doesn’t resemble a mom, daughter, girlfriend and self-loving confident woman for two days and cure this ruin before putting into place preventative steps so this rut doesn’t happen again. The cure is of course to unclutter and clean my work-space, my mind and my soul. I’m basically taking the same approach as over calling pre-flop, I am ending it and getting tighter with my ways, starting with the basics. Of course, stepping away from your game like I am is a tough thing to do, as when you return you are always playing catch-up! Catch-up emails, writing, filing, conferences, will I then be trying to cure my homely rut again? No, I am not as I am taking a full scale project management plan on board to deal with this.
Multi-tasking at its finest is going to be my best friend, as are the beautiful electronics and appliances I own! Automated machines are going to be turned on first and after this I will go for the throat! I will be doing my homely duties (including unpacking my suitcases) I will start with the most likely thing to put me straight back into this situation again in the coming month – the suitcases and washing! After this, a little re-organization of my makeup and wardrobe (good bye floordrobe) and I am on my way to Cure! Lets not forget the filing of docos and pics, I will be cleaning them up during breaks. Add to all of this the brilliance of using your own body weight for workouts and I will have my fitness also covered for the day, though I suspect that it will be more of a cardio and endurance workout instead of muscle & core strengthening.

So then there is the prevention, so I don’t find myself in this ruin and rut ever again! A good prevention starts with an instant un-pack. It doesn’t matter how tired I am on return from my next trip I am unpacking and putting my washing straight into the machine. I will put away my shopping and hand over the gifts I have purchased my family and fold my clothes and put my makeup away as I talk about my adventure. Also, each night following my cure I will be pushing buttons on the automated appliances and setting them to start at the time I wake each morning. Let me call them my “working alarm clocks”. Yes, I have gotten to the stage where I feel I am back in a military environment. ORDER and ROUTINE MA’AM! At the moment, strict order and routine appears necessary. This is a much better “rut” to be in, in my opinion. The routine rut means a clear work-space, mind and soul and – we all know what that leads to: success on and off the table.

A final note that will only apply to the single parents out there:

I will also be working my vocals and using my thong (flip flop footwear, not my underwear) to drive my children to the same objectives and goals. I didn’t have kids to clean up after them or be their slave and I certainly didn’t have sons so I could mow the lawn as they spectate. To escape the bedlam, to rid the rut, to blast away the ruin and strive forward to my goals, I am going to have to be one mean arse mother. To my kids who may read this, may god be with you!

Poker Singles Dating Hook Ups and Relationships Realities

I would consider myself as a poker industry veteran now. I would also consider myself a near expert on poker dating, poker relationships, poker hook ups and the good, bad and ugly of women in poker mixing with men in poker or, of course, trying to date people that are not in the poker industry at all. You need to make a lot of mistakes to learn and when it comes to relationships, dating and poker, mistakes I have sadly made. This means I have learned a lot. Being close friends and acquaintances with people in our beloved poker industry I have also seen a lot, talked a lot and observed a lot relating to poker dating, poker marriages and poker friendships. I figured someone should put out the realities, given I am bored and are sick of writing about serious poker subjects, it may as well be me! Though, when it comes to serious subjects, dating, hookups, relationships and the realities behind them is a serious thing in our lives in reality. By our lives, I of course mean the lives of my fellow poker players, executives and poker media friends in the world.

When I think back at the years gone by and all that I have seen and witnessed, all that I have talked about and all that I have lived, it brings me to make the following immediate recommendations when it comes to being a poker player who's thinking of finding a mate to spend time with, life with, love with, a bed with. They have to understand poker and all that comes with it. They need to have an open mind and be willing to ride the highs and the lows, the travel, the busy times and the early morning wake ups. They also need to be able to separate poker from degenerate gambling and not whine about paying entry into costly tournaments or taking dollars to a ring game on a regular basis. Let me elaborate a little.

I once went on a date with a poker player to whom I will not name other then to say he is officially my most hated person in the world. Now lets remember that I was also a poker player. I really liked this guy and talked to my friend about future prospects, my non poker playing friend. It was only seconds into the conversation when she blurted out "stay away from this piece of shit, he is nothing but a degenerate gambler, find yourself a man that has a real job". With that said, it was friendship over! She had called me names by calling him names. It wasn't about insulting him, in reality she was correct. He also punted on horses, pushed $100 bills through poker machines and smoked a tonne of pot, love is blind, what can I say? She was correct about him, he was the definition of degenerate and much much more, he was also nothing but a mooch, but it was only the poker part of his life that she knew about, the poker part that she referred to. This brought me to the realization that if people I knew were thinking this about people I decided to date in the poker industry, that the men that were thinking about dating me (my poker dates and "non poker industry" dates) friends and families were likely thinking this about me too. God help me! What was I to do? Becoming a crazy cat lady for the rest of my life was one thought! I felt immediately doomed. When it comes to dating, get your date on side before you go any further so they have a good understanding of how poker as a career works and how you aren't selling your shirt any time soon so that they can explain this to those significant in their own lives. That would be speed hump number one out of the way! Make sure they UNDERSTAND what poker is.

Of course a good way to have a date / future love understand is to stick with your own kind! They too are facing the trials of a world that still hasn't accepted a game of mostly skill. They get it! How many poker playing couples do you actually see in a long term and successful relationship though? Think of our beloved A grade players. There truly isn't too many that get together, stay together and live happily ever after. The ones that do though are ever so happy. I cant be sure on why and how  they are so perfect together but do have an understanding that they don't seem to push each others playing styles or game styles onto each other. If they do, I don't know how they do it! Think of trying this with friends, it isn't cool and always ends in some sort of argument or resentment. I think they key here is to support them and the game that they have come to be good at. If they are rather new to the game, that's different! Handing over the skills you have, encouraging and uplifting them can only be a good thing! With that said, pushing them in their play style, not yours. Help that tiger of yours go get em' and be humbly proud of every achievement! All in all, I tend to steer clear of other poker players, in fact, I made it a rule at one stage. Mostly my rule was made as I saw so many failures and so much pain from the result of bad poker to poker relationship outcomes. Plus, a lot of players are all a little too cocky for my liking.

When it comes to snagging that perfect and understanding partner that loves you for who you are you really need to put out there what they are in for! No surprises! A lot of the time a poker player is in what can only be described as a long distance relationship, especially if they travel the circuits. Explaining all that comes with "the job" always works better than surprising them with a month in Las Vegas for the WSOP or a trip around Asia for the APPT, etc.. Explanations of long nights grinding online or at the local casino is a must, as is pointing out that sometimes 3am rises are a necessity to play online tournaments. Add to all of this the most distant part of all, day after day, hour after hour at a poker table with no time for them. The sidekick or better half of a poker player has to be a very patient person and they need to be given opportunity to see if their patience can handle it, especially if you are a woman poker player in a male dominated industry, with males you hang with and chat to all the time, many of which pay you a lot of attention and look after you like a sister or daughter.

Of course every poker player has highs and lows in their career. They have bad beats and graphs that express their mood swings they may face. Those people in the life of a poker player should be able to ride the roller coaster with them. Many a great player has buckled at the knees when their dream of winning a big tournament has ended with a bad beat. Grown men cry, grown men yell, grown men go silent. However you handle the lows, this is an important explanation when you are getting close to people. Understanding why you are somewhat "bi-polar" at times is an important concept for a significant other to grasp and be able to deal with. I know I personally want to sit in a corner alone and talk to no one as I relay the crap hand I just went through or even better, if I could find one, an understanding ear that will take me under their arm and give me a hug and wipe away my tears and hand me a drink. The silence that I have sometimes projected as I deal with my horrible loss or downswing is deafening and not for the faint hearted. It has caused me loss of friends let alone potential boyfriends. If only I made these people in my life understand before the shit hit the fan and they thought I was ignoring them due to something they had done.

I suppose the best outcome for anyone sifting through the millions of possible candidates in the world to be a future lover when you are a poker player is to have them take everything into consideration and educate people before moving forward, as mentioned above. There may be some things I have missed, I always miss things and think of them later, if so, add them in the comments! When it comes to me and finding my Mr Perfect, my list is long & isn't really debatable and that's in the best interests of them, to be honest. I haven't spent the last decade plus as a mostly single woman in this game without learning that some things, when it comes to character, in order to deal with my lifestyle are a must. Making a list like I have and ensuring you tick it off (or rather a list that a special someone ticks off) is a good idea. My list goes a little something like this, add a lot more things, these are the main ones:
  • Understands I wont touch my bankroll for personal use until I cash out profit
  • Understands the seriousness of poker & all it is and that I am not a random bingo player that is willing to gamble my future and explains this to their family and friends
  • Is willing to travel or  - video call a lot
  • Is willing to deal with my roller coaster of highs and lows and support me emotionally
  • Can deal with very early starts and very late nights and loves to watch me sleep in their waking hours
  • Understands I am there to take other mens money, not flirt with them and hook up (no jealousy) and that I have a lot more male friends than female ones
  • Has a good understanding that I breathe, eat and live the game
  • Will cater to my needs without question to help my days be easier, just like I would theirs (making food, bringing me food, doing chores, rubbing my shoulders and helping me do laundry during trips away or long weeks at the PC). Again, this is the same as i would do for them and will, when I am having a break.

Given I play a lot less now (online, especially), and are more media in the poker realm, it isn't so hard to check off my list. When it is full steam ahead "poker play chick" though, it means full dedication to my life in all the small ways a man can and mixing two lives together for a perfect balance. Your list and its importance at any given time will depend on your level of play, enjoy making it poker singles! Enjoy the realities that come with dating in this tough, hard world of poker. Enjoy finding that perfect person to complete what is already a beautiful you! Again, as mentioned above, let me know what I have missed. We are a community after all, one that stands united. If you are one of the lucky couples that both play, don't hesitate to shoot me a mail and tell me your secrets! I would love to relay them to my readers and eliminate my own stigma that revolves around dating another player.

Poker Journey Where Did I Come From? Journey Part 1

I was pretty shocked today to be asked by a colleague and friend just how I started out in this wonderful world of poker. It prompted me to jump to my blog and do some all needed writing. I figured it was time to mark my poker journey. Where did I come from? How did it start? What have I achieved and where have I come to? The first part of a journey is always where it starts. So where did i come from? How did my poker life begin?

Once upon a time in far away Australia there lived a lady in her mid twenties who had some wonderful kids, no partner, no money and no social life. She spent many a night at home after the children retired to bed bored out of her mind for hours on end. Not being able to afford much at all this lady pulled out an old PC and started tinkering away on it on her newly ordered dialup internet connection. She was a big reader so spent most of her nights simply reading things on various internet sites.

One day she had read enough, she couldn't be bothered reading anything else, she felt like playing games and with no man around had no one to play with (lol). She typed in the words "online games" hoping to find something like a mind games site, something like Mensa mind games. Instead of Mensa Mind Games in front of her curious eyes popped up the words "Play Free Online Poker, Download Poker For Free, Play with Real Live people." The lady clicked the link and went to the download page and after waiting about an hour for her dialup connection to download the new poker game she made an account.

The curious lady went straight ahead and found a free money table she could join. There was one she found with 1 seat available and she could see the people on it all chatting very nicely to each other. She joined the table and immediately was welcomed and asked where she came from. Poker wasn't new to her, she had seen the game played as a child and had played many a draw game but playing online poker, keeping up with these weird betting techniques as well as the chat (which may as well have been like that at a BBQ) she found pretty hard.

Over the following hours she got to know a little about the people she had joined and also those who came along as the night grew. She found out that these people all gathered daily. At one stage they pointed out that there was a very long wait line to join the table and it was always a resident friend. The young lady was pointed in the direction of the buddy list and told to add them all and find them tomorrow by clicking their name. She did just that!

The same time the very next evening, the evening after and many, many, many evenings after the lady joined the same people to play a nightly game of poker and chat with her friends about love, life and all the things that came with it. She then found a freeroll tournaments tab and wouldn't you know it! She played her very first tournament with more then 800 players and WON!

Realizing there was not only fun, but also money in online poker the young lady decided she would take a punt and play each night after her kids went to bed to see how much money she could make. Before she knew it she was playing and winning a nice $300 a week which sure as hell made her life a little more comfortable.

The kids loved the bonuses, the lady started saving and she was no longer bored out of her brain. The lady and her family lived happily ever after! Actually; they lived happily ever after until today as she writes this blog post. This is just the start of an amazing poker journey. More tales from both sides of the felt of how my life became where it is today coming up!

Danielle Poker World Update

Well, its been quite some time since I have written which is quite odd right? Regardless, here I go again with a Danielle Poker World update. Due to many things that have happened behind the scenes my blogging and article writing has been on the back burner. Time to kick it into gear again!

So behind the scenes for me I have been watching the updates and legal crap I really need to and want to know about when it comes to online poker. I have been sorting out my own poker game as I was slacking a little on my studies etc etc, I have been starting web development on my own sites and finalizing projects which have been running for a very long time. I have started working a regular job but to do with poker and casino gaming (of course).

During this course I have had many meetings and discussions about our Australian Poker News issues and the effect many online changes have had on it. I have also helped with the upgrading of Australian Poker Weekly from print to online (which is almost done - yay!)

My fair share of health problems has kept me from radio, although I started back again today on ontiltradio.com where I discussed all the health issues i have had - funny show, too bad you missed it :D Music scene has seen me write some more lyrics for Jimmie Lees up and coming album - make sure you watch for them!

I will get back to and continue my moms in poker articles on womanpokerplayer.com and when it comes to womens poker August sets womenspokernews.com back into motion and full operation.

I will be working as an editor on pokerlivenews.com and many other sites in the coming months you will see this in sudden full swing with pokerlivenews being a 2 year project in reality, the same for some other sites but pokerlivenews and womenspokernews my babies. You may also see pokersitenews.com and pokeradd.com pop up out of no where, kind of like my sons site did: deckboy.com (not bad for a 10 year old to own huh?).

I am looking for writers at the moment and have had many offers of contribution so people can get their name out into the industry. Most of us started working for free, if your interested keep this in mind. I am after alllllll kinds of writers! News, articles, strategy, pokerlife, sportsbetting, poker celebrity paparazzi if you must, comedy - anything poker that your heart desires that is YOUR style!!! Email me at hotauschick@gmail.com to submit an example of your work. Writers will be eventually paid, just like with every growing news site and every growing writer.

I am awaiting more details on the Poker Player Academy which I thought looked quite fantastic and will update as soon as i get them. It seems very upstanding with some great named pros in. Although it works kind of like a pyramid, its all about the training as far as i am concerned and if it comes from the best - yay!

I have had discussions with many people around the world about the live poker scene and are really happy to see some series expanding and also offering ladies only events. I have also been watching the WSOP carefully, up until Tony Hachem busted and then I turned it off (sorry everyone!). I was hoping to see a final table for him - NEXT YEAR!!!!!

My online tournament play has been pretty good. My last 3 games:

74/2955
26/387
50/1322

Still trying to work on that win, it surely will come this weekend! (Hopefully not in a $1 entry - an $11 or $20 would be better :) )

That is all for now, not much else to say other then i am hungry and tired and its time to sleep for this crazy little poker chick! Again, if you are interested in pushing your name into the community in a big way through writing email me as per above.

Ultimate Poker Life Busto Stupidity

I can now say I have been completely busto! Busto in every way. I guess it isnt something a poker player would ever like to admit, hell I don't care though, the truth is the truth, why hide it? I guess a poker player losing their shirt, entire roll and lifestyle leaving them begging for poker god mercy or in the case of some degenerates I have seen in the last year; funds from friends is certainly not something a guy would discuss openly. I however am happy to. People need to know what it is like to go busto and also what players in the USA that relied solely on online poker income are likely to expect within the next year!

My busto wasn't one that was planned, the same would apply to everyone I guess. Regardless of what the tourney players may think based on my stats they are able to see it wasn't due to playing badly or bad bankroll management either. In the case of me, it was un-avoidable - sudden and painful.

Never put all your eggs in one basket is definitely something many players in the USA have likely learnt is now a true and just saying, just like I have. Once I was sponsored with the fabulous feltstars I did just that worried about 1 roll only - my feltstars one. I cashed out and paid bills with some rolls on other sites, wasted the funds on others in fun drinking play and left myself with only 1 option - my 100% totally funded sponsor site. Being 100% totally sponsored meant I was given a roll to play with and what I made on cash tables I kept. Nice easy poker lifestyle, until I couldnt play there anymore.

FeltStars had done the right thing by me and still do, none of my busto had anything to do with them of course, it was my own stupidity. In reality with my contract due to be renewed in June I should have been prepared for the worst anyway. On the fateful day I was no longer able to play on Merge I gave my entire funded roll back to them. It was back to the 1c/2c tables for me! Quite the difference from $500 pots!

This crushed my soul, made me cry, left me in limbo, made me feel helpless, hopeless, useless and lifeless. Worse of course was to come when I had nothing to pay my bills. A long time between blog posts as i had my net cut off.

I pity anyone who relied solely on playing on the big 4 that live in the USA. I guess they are in the same situation, wondering how they are going to pay for things - obviously at a completely different level though as most of them likely have a lot more money and a lot less kids then me!

Regardless of anything you do in poker be sure you always have backup sites in case things go bad for you. Hundreds of thousands of dollars being frozen with no apparent way to make an income really sucks for a lot of people right now - especially those that do no live near live casinos. To all those suffering, my thoughts are with you as I get back on track.

Separating Poker From Social Life

Poker is a game of socialization. Whether you play online or live or even both, you are socializing and having fun. The game is far from boring, its something which entertains us all. This is what makes playing poker for a living an awesome job! The job has its ups and downs like any, mostly to do with bad swings and long hours. When using the word job in the previous sentence it is important to remember that those that play poker for a living or to supplement income must remember that this is far from a party, far from socialization. Playing poker is real work and must be separated from normal every day social life.

When we all first start playing poker we all do it for entertainment. I can not think of one person who walked into their first game of poker thinking “What a great job I have, shuffle up and deal and lets get this wage earned!” Simply it doesn’t seem to work like this. Every persons story I have heard on how they started playing poker starts differently but never that way. This means even the best and richest poker players in the world that have succumb poker as a hobby or fun time started the same as all of us. They played for fun and entertainment originally.

It isn’t always the case that any player should stop making poker a social game. Doing that is impossible regardless. Any poker player who is planning on making poker their main source of income or supplementary income needs to consider this article. They need to somewhat separate this new part time or full time job from their social life as much as possible.

How does one do this? How do we separate poker from our social life? I myself am only beginning to find out! In studying a lot of poker players lifestyles though it really is simple and something I must take my own advice on.

  • Set your times that you plan on playing and make sure they are uninterrupted alike you were working an office job. Make your part time hours or full time hours 100% dedicated to your game and nothing else.
  • Don't take social habits such as drinking and smoking to your live or online table. Don't take chit chat with friends unless it is about the game to your “job” with you.
  • Manage your poker bankroll completely separately. This includes the separation of “partying funds” at live tournaments. In saying that, there is always the case that a man may find a fling night at a strip club (lol) a way to ease tensions before a big game.
  • If you are to play a game of poker socially with friends and or family, make it that way. Don't make it serious - have your drinks and your snack food all sorted for the time of your life. Make it as if it were a day at the pool.
  • Turn off ALL social networks! No facebooking, yahooing, orkuting, msning or anything UNLESS it is in regard to the game at the time – in saying that unless you are whining about a bad beat or your current status rank wise, I can not think WHY you would have them on. (says she who always does – again I must follow my own advice.)

All in all unless poker is a social aspect of your life these things need considering and not for one second am I saying there is not more things to do such as open specific bank accounts, keep running tally’s and associated expenses etc separate. Again, I am just separating myself!

Poker and Dogs Help My Passions

Maybe not for everyone, but for myself and many others I have found along my life journey there are two passions beyond family and friends that go hand in hand, poker and dogs. For those who know me personally or have followed my facebook posts about my beloved canine friends in the past, you would know that I was outrageously mad to say the least over the last few months. To all those that have no clue as yet due to my absence from the poker world things got a lot worse for me and my best friend (one of them anyway).

I had made discussions and posts about the annoyance and anger regarding the treatment of my beloved dogs and myself by the ranger. Not all the rangers, just 1. This ranger has continued his crap to the point I almost had a nervous breakdown and my health suffered incredibly as he partially won a battle against us and pretty much forced the re-homing of my best friend, my baby, my love.

Let me explain and then let me ask you something.

My dog apparently escaped and ran up to an elderly lady. I wont go into details other then to say the lady seems to care very little about this, the dog didnt bite her nor attack her but the ranger classed this as intimidation and harassment, let's remember we are talking about my beautiful border collie puppy you have all seen pics of. The ranger landed on my doorstep at 8am on Sunday and said "Hand her over to be put down or pay $1000.00". I had just lost my nan, had my son in my care after major surgery on his arm and severe health issues I will not disclose but can say are a womens worse nightmare. He would not even allow me to re-home her.

I convinced him to give me until 10am the next day and he came back as promised. I told him I was re-homing my pet temporarily (to keep it away from harms way being HIM) and that i would pay the fines. Not good enough! He wanted my dog dead. (revenge?) He said he was placing a dangerous dog order on her and that i would be forced to cage her infinity. Not having this cage imposes fines such as $33,000.00. What does one do?

I refused to accept this and locked myself inside hysterical. He called seniors. I called for help. (That's the summary).

I asked the assistance of people in the poker community such as Peter Blackhall from NoahsK9 school. He did a fabulous job helping without even thinking twice. I also managed to find rescue groups to help me out such as Border Collie Rescue or Arajoel. The situation didn't turn out perfect, far from it. But my dog lives and at this stage has no dangerous dog order and i do not believe it will get one.

The dog has been re-homed with Arajoel and I believe it was NoahsK9 schools convincing as well as the strength of the rescue organizations leader that saved her life. I was powerless without them. I am still paying the fines and my heart is broken and missing a piece for forever. I will miss playing online poker as my health improves over the coming weeks (and the Dr visits and hospital visits get fewer) with my beloved girl by my feet or snuggling with me as I do my thing - play poker and love my dogs. She lives though and has another chance of life, thank goodness for the support we received.

I know that people are going through tragedies left right and center, heart breaking ones to say the least. This is how I felt yet was helped unconditionally and while i didn't have a mass of funds by these people. If you are a poker player and a dog lover, and have received any kind of support from me in the past. I ask you to step up and show your care in return. I really never ask for anything, this would be a first! Please help the people that are looking after my beloved girl so they can continue their good work. As everyone says: Every Cent Counts! So does every ounce of support!

A donation to this cause would be gratefully received and go 100% towards the rescue and medical costs of helping these neglected and rescued animals. We take donations using Paypal, please click on the donate button.

For a great trainer in NSW - Noahs K9 School: http://www.noahsk9school.com.au/

My sincere thanks to Arajoel, please share this post with your poker buddies and animal loving friends. It only takes 2 minutes to give $1 to help these wonderful people care - (alike I was helped!)

Putting Bad Beats In Prospective

Everyone whines about bad beats in poker and for a reason; they hurt! They hurt our determination, they hurt our bankrolls, they hurt our will, they hurt our poker souls and sometimes our will to play the next game. Bad beats make us curse, cry, smash mice, blab to other players, put down other players, scream at the poker god. A bad beat must be placed in prospective however. How bad is a bad beat when one compares it to bad beats beyond a poker table?

The greatest poker players on earth never cease to stop teaching us, they seem to teach by accident on many different levels. During the opening of the Aussie Millions Poker Championship, Joe Hachem discussed the flash flooding and loss of life and property in Queensland Australia. He said "Watch this video, and remember it, it may put your bad beats in prospective". It was the best advice I received all year! I probably shouldn't have just quoted those words as they were not his exact words, but fairly close. The video showed heartache on every level. Let me explain!

The tears rolled during the video, life's bad beats were certainly thrown at these people. How many of us can say they have had a $500,000.00 bad beat? People on the video did, even kids - their house, assets, property all swept away with only a slab of concrete remaining. How many of us have had a "priceless" bad beat? By priceless I mean a bad beat that you will never forget that changes your life forever in an instant and takes the ones you love most from you; in the most horrific way? Again, a man on the video did, he lost his wife and son, they were swept away in a torrent of water, his son a non swimmer who was hailed a hero as he begged for his little brother to be saved first. Imagine the little brother bad beat - His brother was swept away as he was rescued and his mother looked at his brother being swept away and let go and went with him - This was right in front of that little boys eyes. Now that IS a bad beat!

I lay awake most of the night thinking of bad beats. I thought of every bad beat I have ever had on a poker table. I then thought of every bad beat I have ever had in life. There is no comparison. Yesterday I changed, I changed forever! My bad beats have been much like these I talk of. I have watched my own home burn down in front of my eyes, with it many memories and every possession I owned as well as my beloved mans best friend, my dog. I have lost loved ones and friends to horrific accidents. One week I remember losing 8 friends and family members. I have died and been resuscitated and suffered the most horrible health battles and pain imaginable (to this day). My trip aces being smashed by 7 and 2 off suit is now in my mind not so bad when I think of this.

Of course I don't want to think of these things but the last 3 days for me have been pretty disasterous and I have shed sub-mountable tears. Maybe sub-mountable is an understatement, my face is swollen from crying it seems. You know, what I am about to write doesn't even seem like a bad beat now, but for me it has felt like it!

I was told by my doctor I would have surgery next Thursday
I was told my nan was in kidney failure etc and was going to die
My son smashed his arm, pretty much compound fractured it
My son had a 3.5 - almost 4 hours surgery on his arm during which the crash cart was called, I almost lost him
I spent a night and day with my agonized screaming son, now filled with plates, screws, wires, staples and other forms of metal
I was advised my grandmother died
I was asked to write an obituary or whatever it is called
I wrote it
I passed out cold to wake all night to pain relief begging, nightmares and bloody flooding again!

I am over my bad beats and now have them in prospective, I hope I helped you too - that is all.
