Separating Poker From Social Life

Poker is a game of socialization. Whether you play online or live or even both, you are socializing and having fun. The game is far from boring, its something which entertains us all. This is what makes playing poker for a living an awesome job! The job has its ups and downs like any, mostly to do with bad swings and long hours. When using the word job in the previous sentence it is important to remember that those that play poker for a living or to supplement income must remember that this is far from a party, far from socialization. Playing poker is real work and must be separated from normal every day social life.

When we all first start playing poker we all do it for entertainment. I can not think of one person who walked into their first game of poker thinking “What a great job I have, shuffle up and deal and lets get this wage earned!” Simply it doesn’t seem to work like this. Every persons story I have heard on how they started playing poker starts differently but never that way. This means even the best and richest poker players in the world that have succumb poker as a hobby or fun time started the same as all of us. They played for fun and entertainment originally.

It isn’t always the case that any player should stop making poker a social game. Doing that is impossible regardless. Any poker player who is planning on making poker their main source of income or supplementary income needs to consider this article. They need to somewhat separate this new part time or full time job from their social life as much as possible.

How does one do this? How do we separate poker from our social life? I myself am only beginning to find out! In studying a lot of poker players lifestyles though it really is simple and something I must take my own advice on.

  • Set your times that you plan on playing and make sure they are uninterrupted alike you were working an office job. Make your part time hours or full time hours 100% dedicated to your game and nothing else.
  • Don't take social habits such as drinking and smoking to your live or online table. Don't take chit chat with friends unless it is about the game to your “job” with you.
  • Manage your poker bankroll completely separately. This includes the separation of “partying funds” at live tournaments. In saying that, there is always the case that a man may find a fling night at a strip club (lol) a way to ease tensions before a big game.
  • If you are to play a game of poker socially with friends and or family, make it that way. Don't make it serious - have your drinks and your snack food all sorted for the time of your life. Make it as if it were a day at the pool.
  • Turn off ALL social networks! No facebooking, yahooing, orkuting, msning or anything UNLESS it is in regard to the game at the time – in saying that unless you are whining about a bad beat or your current status rank wise, I can not think WHY you would have them on. (says she who always does – again I must follow my own advice.)

All in all unless poker is a social aspect of your life these things need considering and not for one second am I saying there is not more things to do such as open specific bank accounts, keep running tally’s and associated expenses etc separate. Again, I am just separating myself!

Poker Celebrities Chris Money Maker Celebrity 7

The next poker celebrity to be listed on my blog is Christopher Bryan Moneymaker, better known as Chris Money Maker. He was born on November 21st, 1975 in Atlanta.

Chris is an American poker player who won the main event at the 2003 World Series of Poker. His victory is known to have been a victory that was one of the main boosts for the poker boom in the years following. This win has been called by many; the "Moneymaker Effect".

Moneymaker attended High School Tennessee and he continued his study to obtain a master's degree in accounting from the University of Tennessee.

Chris Moneymaker has an autobiography, Moneymaker: How an Amateur Poker Player Turned $40 into $2.5 Million at the World Series of Poker. Hi autobiography was published in 2005. He also has made an official website promoting poker stars as an official poker stars pro.

Basically Chris Money Makers story is told to the world in a simple form. In 2003, Chris entered a $39 satellite on PokerStars and won. This gave him a seat in a larger satellite, one that had a World Series Main Event package up for grabs. Chris also won this tournament, and headed off to Las Vegas to play in what was to be his first live tournament. Against all odds, Chris made it to the final table and went on to claim the gold bracelet, winning prize money of $2,500,000.00.

When Chris Moneymaker is not busy travelling the world on the professional poker circuit, he spends most of his free time with family. When he gets the chance, Chris likes playing a range of sports, especially football, golf and basketball.

Since the WSOP Chris Money Makers poker road has definitely not ended. He has since cashed quite a few times; nothing however compares to being the World Series of Poker Champion. The following are further “career highlights”:

2003 WSOP $10,000 Main Event May 2003 1st$ 2,500,000

WPT Bay 101 Shooting Stars $5,500 Main Event March 2004 2nd $200,000

2004 WSOP $5,000 Pot Limit Omaha May 2004 10th $21,000

EPT London £5,200 No Limit Hold’em September 2007 17th $24,480

PokerStars WCOOP $10,300 No Limit Hold’em September 2008 6th $139,635

Chris Moneymakers name emphasizes his credibility in the poker world. Many people think he is called “Moneymaker” due to his victory. It has been spoken that Chris Moneymaker has been asked the same question over and over: “Is that your real name?”.

Please note there have been further results and triumphs since writing this post.

Poker Time Clock Strategies Bomb!

Many people look beyond the obvious use of a time clock and strategy for using time in their play online. Poker time clocks, what are they for? Can they be used as a bomb, a lethal weapon? You all know what they are for, no question! That's not what this post is about. This is about effectively using time clocks and not just the time clocks that we have for our personal use in a tournament, not just the clocks that we push the TIMECLOCK button for. Turning the timeclock (or timebank) into a bomb!

I know we wish we had more time up our sleeves when making some serious decisions in online poker. Certainly we wish we had more time up our hands come the end of a major tournament. Time clocks (ones used when we push TIMECLOCK) have an obvious use, time clocks are used when critical decisions need making and we need time for our heads to run back over what has just happened in a hand and also what things like what we know about a player before we ship those chips into a pot or fold our hand. Saving your time clock is something you really should do for the final stages of a tournament or that make or break decision - the big one. (That's what i do anyway).

I wanted to go off the subject of using time clocks for this reason though. Every hand you play in online poker you have a certain amount of time to make your decision. You will notice as you play in tournaments some people take a heck of a lot longer to act and play their turn then others. There are 7 reasons for this:

  • They are Multi-tabling and it took them a while to get back to that tournament and that hand
  • They are using all the time they have on their hands to carefully calculate every single hand and decision without auto folding.
  • They are trying to piss you off (this happens in heads-up a lot I have found - bloody turtles)
  • They are calculating a nasty move against you
  • They are deliberately wasting time so the blinds rise higher and more people are knocked out.
  • Their telephone rang, or they were distracted by a child (excuse me for all those delays everyone!)
  • They have connection issues - this normally shows up however.

So, in saying all of those reasons - that come to mind (they are the ones I can think of) we can now look at the reasons and use time clocks and time effectively, for strategy purposes.

Poker should have been called patience. This I am sure of! Slowing down your play and laying off the auto fold if you are not playing a ton of tables is a good strategy move to start with. I really watch what players at my tables do time wise. A player may sit there and you can tell they have selected autofold 10 times in a row. Their hand folds as quick as it is there turn to act. Suddenly this player who has obviously clicked autofold pauses.........

Yep! They have a hand and it isn't 78 of diamonds! The longer they go on trying to make the decision, the more you can actually place them on particular hands - a lot of the time anyway and also in my experience. Think of looking down at AA - Straight away you are betting out big, same applies to KK, QQ, AK suited right? So your opponent who auto folds - they make a quick pause, then suddenly make a big bet - what does this tell you? They usually have a premium hand! They paused and didnt think for long - again TIME "they paused and didnt think for long" Thats not a situation where they have KQ right? You can usually place them on other hands such as mid sized pocket pairs too as they push 1/2 pot bet auto buttons, 2/3, 3/4 and so on. YES you can work out they have such hands even if they do not usually auto fold. I am using them as an example for your strategy use of the time clock. Do not auto fold every hand. You are giving away tells when you do have a hand, believe me, you are. think hard about it...............

Strategy tip 1 for using time - USE IT! Pretty simple tip. Multi-tabling auto fold is much easier obviously, if you can avoid it though. Every single hadn you have a lot of time up your sleeve. You have time pre and post flop, on the turn and on the river and between bets. Use your time - think carefully!

Now, now that you are not just autofolding everything and check fold everything (I left that part out - same applies for auto select check fold and I should state that i am not in any means saying everyone should play like this) you have further online poker time weapons up your sleeve. You can now pull what i call hollywood stunts (refer to article on this blog - just search holly wood - search blog at the left near the top). In summary, you can use time as a trapping mechanism. The article summaries (by memory) Gus Hansen playing a hand online. Durr (by memory) had hit his Ace on the flop. Gus used time before the hand and time after the flop. Durr bet out on the flop AQ? (Gus does this a lot so keep in mind I could be talking a different hand). Gus sat and used as much time as he could before calling. Turn Durr bets again, again Gus uses all the time again before reluctantly calling. The river was blank and Durr pushed all in. Gus snap called (as he does). Gus had hit trip Q's on the flop. Durr held AK

Strategy tip 2 for using time: Use the time you have as a weapon to trap and trick. ..................................THE TIME BOMB.....................................

It obviously appeared to Durr that Gus was hesitating, wondering. I am guessing that Durr placed Gus on A rag or A 10. He obviously assumed that Gus was wondering about that kicker - that kicker that he didnt have. Gus effectively used time to trap and trick. i have done this myself many a time, usually when i have the nut flush. It's a great way to have others commit their chips, Glenn Franco (hunt the man down) has witnessed me do this during at an online poker table times of abuse and mentally stress thrown by other players at me. He was very pleased he could give them a mouthful when i time trapped their arse! Useless woman huh? :D

Now to using all the time you can in tight situations. Tight situations such as the bubble! I received some strategy advice only today from Michael Pickard, a primarily live poker player whom also is having a tough time with his game at the moment. (Sorry if you didnt want your name mentioned Michael). He told me to slow down the table. I was so close to the bubble, so close I could smell the money but I was one of the lower stacks - not the lowest by any means but quite low. he said - "Stop folding so quickly, waste time". Now this is something i had forgotten, I left this strategy behind! So simple - slow down, use all the time you can.

Strategy tip 3 for using time: Slowing down your table so you are more likely to make the money.

Its a pretty obvious thing to do. There are 20 stacks smaller then you. There are 7 players until the bubble pops. Use all the time you can even if you have 72os before you fold when in hand for hand mode. You have AA do the same, use all the time you can before jamming out that great big bet. this makes small stacks suffer. it puts pressure on them, they are blinding out, they have to make a move. They may not be on your table, they may be right next to you. You certainly keep the upper hand on them by holding each hand up 20 seconds though right? You are obviously not on all their tables and their table may be folding very fast! That's not good for them when they have limited blinds. You can almost fold your way to the bubble without premium hands, without playing any hands.

This method can go against you if suddenly the 20 stacks that are lower then you are doubling up - but its unlikely. It sure as hell worked for me today! Try not to make it obvious like I did though. If you do make it obvious, the other players will get so annoyed! That brings me to my next tip.

Strategy tip 4 for using time: Piss Players off with Turtle Style Poker

You have an impatient aggressive player that drives his mouse like a Ferrari? Piss him off! Play turtle poker - it works especially super heads up. Slow down so slow you have them sitting waiting, waiting, waiting every hand they may just say "Screw this!!!!!!!" and play crazier :) I can positively advise that this does occur as i am one of those players that have gotten the shits with turtle man play and just wanted to get the hell out of the SNG. I.e - I had better things to do then sit there waiting for the slow coach opponent to hurry his butt up all for a $5 HU prize. The slow coach turtle won the game, I just wanted out - needless to say, his use of time PISSED ME OFF! (I wouldn't fall for it now though). I wouldn't throw a game like that now.

Please note that playing live play you can always call time on someone which also pisses them off big time hehe

A lot of players do not and will not use these methods, there is no doubt. A lot will though, I am one of them. I hope in one way or another that these little tips will help you.

Poker Drugs Alcohol Sex Thugs

I am a quadruplet when it comes to these things - Poker, Drugs, Alcohol, and Sex. They are 4 big words that people seem to associate together making poker players look like thugs. I am not sure I am a thug though! Maybe many poker players are, maybe however those that indulge in all 4 things are simply normal human beings. Maybe all poker players secretly binge and crave for these things and possibly there are many poker players that do nothing but play poker. Certainly I am no angel though. I am not a demon either in saying that.

All of the biggest named poker players in the world have at least one of these things in their list of activities. Certainly they have poker, thats without question. Most of them also drink alcohol from what I have worked out and they no doubt have sex too. Even the women that look like saints in our industry have sex, I believe the proof is there in their off spring. A lot of our lady players and many of our male players have kids so sex also goes without saying.
Does anyone really think there are players out there that do not do anything exce
pt play poker? They are all human, they all live lives. Some a little steamier then others, regardless even our senior citizens in poker "play up".

When it comes to drugs though we are thankfully leaving some players in the royal room. Drugs however is a wide word. What i mean is there are many types of drugs.

My quadruplet lifestyle of Poker Drugs and Alcohol isnt as bad as some players. My list includes the biggest killing drug: Cigarettes (eew - disgusting). Also the pharmaceutical medications I take for my an
xiety and panic attacks on a daily basis one being valium. Add then my pain relief when needed which is pretty frequent. I pretty much quadruple drugs let alone poker drugs alcohol and sex which I guess is pretty bad. Does this make me look like an industry thug though?

In regard to the poker industry and outsiders, I care what people think. I do consider myself somewhat of a get up and go role model. I dont really care what other players think about me though, do you? Here's the thing when it comes to other poker players and getting your name out there - if they are thinking they are talking and if they are talking its good for me! As long as they are not telling lies like saying I am a bong head, a coke head or a crack whore it does
n't bother me. Even when they say these things its like water off a ducks back to me - most people know me well enough to know I condone drug use (thats sounding hypocritical but true - marijuana through to heroin, I dont care what "illegal drug" you take, dont offer it to me.

I have take
n quite a few drugs in my past though. For anyone that doesnt know me so well I was a stoner and a half until I was about 25. All day, every day I smoked pot. I look back now and think of how much money and how many brain cells I wasted and cringe. Not sure why i did that other then it became habitual and was really pretty awesome to be smashed all day. The addiction went out the door as quick as Santa Claus though. I just woke one morning and said "The party is over" and never smoked that crap again. I have many friends that tug away, many who play poker, I simply ignore them as they smoke their joints or pipes and continue drinking my drink.

I have also taken speed (I drank it lol). I drank it before a trip to crown casino about 12 years ago (yes I have been around a lot longer then most of you Aussie's think when it comes to Crown Casino but thats another story). I didnt sleep all night and day, I drank more alcohol then I ever have in my life over the 36 hour period and I didnt feel dunk. I smashed about 7k over the black jack tables and about 8k right back at me. I danced, roamed the streets and partied in my crown towers room until my body was jumping in and out of consciousness. I wont do it again. The after effects are disgusting.

Anyway, enough about what I have done, i am not here to self confess myself as a crazy psycho drug ridden, drunken smoking poker player with a sex drive that would kill a nun if she found out. Mostly as that isnt true. I am trying to logically think if all poker players dabble, used to dabble or closet dabble and if the world thinks we are thugs.
To look at the world beyond poker. To look at the people who do not play poker. I think we are pretty even. I think they can keep their traps shut if they want to tart mouthing and calling poker players thugs.

How many of you have seen little old ladies sitting pumping hundreds of dollars through a poker machine they are literally filling their life with as they drink wine and smoke a cigarette? Ha! Caught! Little old ladies against poker players, we are onto YOU!

How many people have seen young guys in suits drunk, smoking a cigarette and high on drugs about to hit the casino tables as they walk on in jamming coins in slot machines as they do their weekly wage? Business men you have been OUTED! ha!

How many people have seen our biggest celebrities playing up? (Thats self explanatory).

How many have seen average Joe's hit the TAB and sportsbetting on the weekend as they get drunk and have a fag (Aussie slang for cigarette) in their backyard by the bbq? CAUGHT!

Lastly, how many people have thought about what the queen of England does? She sure a hell had sex in her earlier days and sure as hell do all the princesses and princes and the president and the politicians. All of you are outed. Your all bad for a reason. I am sure you all "sip champagne or scotch" I am sure you all pop a pill when your head hurts and I am sure you have all gambled on a game which is less likely to make you money then poker would.

In summary -

Dear world full of people that think poker players are thugs. Please take a long hard look at yourself. You calling poker players thugs or thinking of them as drunks, and addicts that take drugs have sex, get pissed and gamble please know that you do also.

To the poker players that REALLY party hard and hit hard drugs and spend their entire life pissed. I will enjoy playing you when you are in that state and eliminating some chance of that in your old age by taking your coinage.

That is all!

Online Poker Abuse

Occasionally we see people mouthing their traps off at live tables in casinos throughout the world. Not so often though, not as often as when we play online poker. I compare the people who mouth off and say the most disgusting horrible things during a game of poker to those that people mention as cyber bullies. I am sure they are wife beaters and child beaters too!

They are far from cool.
Online poker gives people will low self esteems that really suck at poker the ability to let loose at people who obviously dont want to hear it and usually dont deserve it. If they were playing in a live poker room or casino instead of an online poker room, they would mostly have their arses kicked out and never be able to return. Too bad we didnt all have a flick switch or a security guard in our own home to have them booted.

So what exactly do these people think they are achieving by abusing other players and calling them names? Maybe I should have asked the guy this morning who blatantly told the whole table he wanted to F my face? Are players like this on drugs? Playing drunk? Always like that? Seriously whats the go? He distracted me for a second, like thats going to help him win. I certainly am not tilting from some dumb comment like that.

I remember back to the days of my free poker playing. It was a heck of a lot worse back then. Some players hunted you down and came to your free play table simply to harass you. When thinking of these free play people who do it, it makes me realize that they are simply filthy scum with nothing better to do and no one that actually cares. I mean they do it on play money tables as well as buy-in tables so distraction cant be the reason. I guess it is a likely scenario that they simply are angry, nasty people.

These people are from all corners of the globe. They are not only from US friendly or Australian Online Poker Rooms. They are everywhere! They are unavoidable! If i was to be a programmer I wouldn't be worried about programming the chat boxes so they do **** when someone says F#ck. Everyone still know what they have said. its really so dumb! I would be programming the chat boxes to send them warnings before finally banning them if the poker room managers deem their behavior is inapropriate (or language rather). A little message to security wouldnt go astray. I know ome rooms you just type poker room manager or the like and along comes someone to deal with it.

My many friends know that back in my younger days I had my chat suspended more then 10 times by mouthing back at people. If they can ban me on play money tables for defending myself with an F U Ahole Your a D#ck. Surely they can ban the perps. For the record i have settled down over the years and have happily kept my chat for many without it suspended.

I am not sure why I wrote this blog post other then this face Fing guy made me realize its a big issue and probably VERY offensive to some people and to point out to myself and to others that turning chat off could be a good idea. In saying that however, you miss out on online tells when you do this. People cant help but speak about their hands when they are over, this gives you a good indicator of what they are up to that you cant see. It a lose lose situation. Learning to ignore is the only option I think.... thats a "I think".

I still don't have an answer after all these years. I sure as hell have worked up defense though - pure ignorance, its bliss :)
To the guy that told me he wanted to F my face today. Please be warned I bite hard - go ahead and try it, you will be missing more then chat after you do!
