Benefits Tips Playing Suited Connectors

The big debate! Playing premium poker hands, waiting for premium poker hands, having patience, raking everyone's bucks up each time those pocket aces are in your hand. Do we sit and wait for these hands or mix and match it around a little? As Gus Hansen always says "A little bit of this, a little bit of that". Do we play all hands when we are in position to do so - ANY TWO CARDS or wait?

I answered a question on facebook not so long ago - "What is the best starting hand?". It doesn't take a genius to determine this right? AA without a doubt in my mind! AA was of course my answer. This does not mean that it is the best hand after the flop though, it also doesn't mean its the best hand if you are seen as a Gus Hansen and are deadly when it comes to those suited connectors and small pairs. Any good player post flop if they are smart enough will fold pocket aces if they suspect it must be done. Pocket aces are the best starting hand and premium hands are the best hands to start with, in most cases.

There are times when not sitting waiting for premium poker hands is a must. When must we mix and match our game about?

When you are being blinded out and need to protect your blinds, you must play in a tournament. Folding and busting with minimal chips just isn't going to work. Pick your spots and play your cards. Before you do however, be sure to have a plan in your head, if you miss the flop - you need to be representing a hand you do not have and be willing to back off.

When you are on a table full of tight bums playing suited connectors and small pairs its a must in my opinion to play suited connectors and small pairs, even 69suited is sexy to me! You know they are all waiting for their pocket aces and AK /AQ/ AJ/ JJ and so on and so forth so if you hit the flop nicely they are doomed. Be sure to get a nice price on these cards though. You wouldn't call an all in - that would be stupid. Get nice pot odds for your cards. As per above, be sure to have a plan in your head, if you miss the flop - you need to be representing a hand you do not have and be willing to back off.

Play them around the blinds on cash tables, specifically short handed. I have found this to be an optimal way of keeping the cash in your kitty for the premium hands that you will eventually get. You can not just sit there waiting for AA KK QQ - If you do, you are going broke. Raise, if you are re-raised again, back off. The amount of cash you can make stealing, stealing stealing is amazing. If you hit the flop with 2 pair or a set and your opponent hits their ace, again its bliss for you.

Play them occasionally to take away the "rock solid player" title you may have been given, it will ensure you will be paid off when your big hands hit. Show the cards if you need to fold (not always just once or twice) and the other players may be thinking this guy plays anything therefore when you hit a nice big premium hand they will throw their cash your way, believing you have crap (I must specify not all players just some).

Lets consider the attributes of a player that plays premium hands and pocket pairs only. They fold, fold, fold, fold and then call. What have they got? It doesnt take a genius to work out 22,33,44,55,66,77,88,99 is sitting in their hands right? Maybe A 10 off suit? We know they dont have 78, 9 10, 56 etc - they only play premium hands and small pockets. A 10 is likely the worse of the Ax combinations and 99 the worst of the lower pockets - why? They are rock solid and tight and flat called.....

Next your in a hand with them and they raise! ummm Dude, I know you have AA, KK, QQ, JJ, 10 10, Ak, AQ, AJ and possibly A10 suited. Do you really want to be as readable as that? Stop, think and smile as you play your mix and match hands as you know that they cant read you and if they do what are they reading?

Playing suited connectors and small pairs equates to the following attributes (compared to the rock solid premium card player):

Little me the mix and match player that has shown a few connected suited starting hands and small pairs and even a 69 suited has flat called - lets look at the difference of what my hand ranges are and how much harder I am to read. I flat call I could have 22,33,44,55,66,77,88,99, A10, 23s, 34s, 45s, 56s, 67s, 78s, 89s, 9 10s. also add 10 Jos, J Qos, KQos. Much wider range yeah? Not predictable! Very Scarey!

So, now I raise! AA, KK, QQ, JJ, 10 10, AK, AQ, AJ, A 10 suited or otherwise, KQs, QJ suited or possibly an of the lower pairs such as 99,88,77,66 depending on the table I play at - again, a much larger hand range right?

Let's place me in a fictional hand with the rocks - those only playing premium starting hands. I am in the BB and the rock raises 3 times the BB. I am getting not so bad odds with my 9 10s. The flop is QJ8 - The opponent is all but shipping every last cent into the pot with QQ, JJ right? Bring it on! I have a straight and a flush draw! Would they even suspect this if i had not previously shown I was a rock? I think not. The flop could be very different though, in this case I know i am beaten and its time to back off!

Playing suited connectors isn't a good idea from first position in my experience, there are so many more people to act so don't do it, you will waste you money pre flop. There is a time, there is a place too. In your blind areas and on a table when there are no more LAGS (loose aggressive players) left to act. A lot must be considered and studied before playing them. Don't lose your shirt attempting to hit a flop and know when and when not to chase.

Chase with your suited connectors post flop if you have a straight draw and a flush draw. No point taking a chance on a possible 6 outs right? Be a little aggressive if you are against a rock that you are positive have AK AQ AJ and see if they back off, if they don't its time for you to. Again do not lose your shirt! It can be a good trap or a very expensive outcome!

Before attempting to play suited connectors at any table with cash you really should study the odds and when and when not to play them a little more. Half of what I have written in this blog post is from my experience and I am not Gus Hansen or Daniel Negreanu. I don't claim to be an expert, just a person who wants to help players at a newbie level play the game a little more to its and their potential. I have been playing low limits of late and tonight I got my ass kicked playing premium hands only except for a miss click thanks to my little darling kids with an all in bet with me holding 74s lol. 2 days ago I smashed heads at the same limits as I threw in a "Little bit of this and a little bit of that". I certainly know what I prefer. Screw being read by other players bring on my suited connectors and some beautiful flops and tight players!

My favorite hand is today's blog pic! 78 is the year I was born, diamonds a girls best friend and suited connectors!

Aussie Poker Millions Hat Trick Adventure

This will likely be my last blog post before I take off to the 2011 Aussie Millions Poker Championship with my partner and photographer Tyrone Hunter to report on the $100,000.00 challenge. That's not what i wanted to write about though. I wanted to discuss my thoughts on the whole Aussie patriotism and the possible results of the Aussie Millions 2011 being, a possible Aussie Hat Trick!

We have witnessed 2 Aussie fairy tale endings in a row now, being the wonderful win by Stewart Scott followed by the win of Tyron Krost, also an Aussie. We Aussies like doing things in threes, there is nothing better then a hat trick (3 in a row) for us! Will the Aussie crowd roar as another Aussie crosses the Aussie Millions Poker Championship finish line in first place?

My thoughtful adventure on this topic started last January after Tyron Krost won the main event. Many of the Aussie spectators didn't even realize he was an Aussie and left! I remember having a small talk to Marsha Waggoner saying, I am sure there is one Aussie left (3 handed). Tyrone my partner disagreed as did most others in the crowd. I then looked around to see the Aussie cheer squad gone to realize I must have been wrong. Gladly there was one Aussie left and of course as stated he was victorious.

The very next day i was shocked to say the least - 2 Aussie Poker Players in a row! I started to think of that hat trick then and there and knew that 2011 would be even sweeter if an Aussie was on the final table. The live bloggers would be going crazy!

Anyway, I got to thinking of all the winning Aussies, we have a lot of them now. So many solid players! I wondered to myself who I would love to see win. i have so many close Aussie friends playing in the event and would so sweetly love to see them win. I have so many friends overseas though playing also. I will be cheering whoever my closest friend is on the final table I guess! But to witness a hat trick is something i would also love to see.

My first stop on this little adventure will be the player welcome party. This will follow with a close railing of the $100,000.00 Challenge and then the main event! A hat trick adventure of my own - my 3 favorite and what I consider to be the most exciting and important events on the calender.

To all those already there - I look forward to seeing you and wish you the very best. I am off on a pre adventure to find a dress to wear, I just don't have one that's suitable! I might stop by the hair salon and the beauty therapist along the way. I think a new pair of swim wear is also on the cards as well as a stack of caffeine tablets for the late nights ahead. Here's hoping for a fabulous time! - Did I mention it's the third year in a row with Tyrone by my side as a companion at the events? Certainly a hat trick for me already! It is also the 3rd year in a row that i will be writing for APW (Australian Poker Weekly) at the event, and that Tyrone will be taking pics! Howz That!

Poker Manifestation Positive Thought and Determination

"Come to momma chippies!"

A few days before the new year set in I wrote about the year that had been. I decided that ultimate focus on my regime was a must for 2011 and also a few great poker wins. 2010 really sucked for me win wise, and although I had a fabulous 2011 in focus, I decided to hit out 2010 with a bang! I was so down with a huge downswing in my game and terrible choices when it came to making decisions at the table that I made it a must to WIN an MTT before 2010 ended. This would see me step into 2011 a happy and focused poker player on an upswing with the thought in my head
"Come to momma chippies!"
Instead of "here we go again with another loss!"

This decision is what made me realize I could do it! If i set my mind to it I could do anything! That's something that I had always believed in but somehow lost in 2010. I told my good friend Michael and my partner Tyrone - I am going to win this! Tyrone seemed pessimistic (and for good reason based on my results) and Michael said you can do it! Although negativity is something no-one needs, tyrones blasphemous comment made me more determined. i love to prove him wrong!

I made an effort to keep in the top 10 for the most part of the tournament and brought myself to a level of "zone" over and over i kept declaring that "I was taking it down." Unfortunately part way through I copped a bad, bad beat leaving me 2nd last with only 900 chips. Tyrone was sure that he was right and that i was going to be moody after this. I refused to give up. There were less then 20 players to go. A few double ups was all it was going to take and I was back! A lot of double ups actually! The leader was on 40,000 chips!

I sat, I faught back, hand after hand after hand. With 4 players to go, I knocked 2 out in one hand and found myself heads up in an awkward position. I had a 5.5:1 chip deficit headsup. The leader was on 110,000 chips by memory, I had 19,000. I refused to give up, I had come this far! I had made my mind up and i was NOT going to lose!

The ball was in my court to play the best headsup game I ever had to take this tourney down. Lucky for me I had focused on headsup play for the last few months of 2010! A few traps and a lot of agression afterwards and the tourney was mine! I had never cheered so much in my entire poker life. It was now December 31st 2010 and I had won an MTT! The last for the year as manifested and planned. The win wasnt big and the field far from enormous, regardless I did what i had planned to!

At the same time I won a $50 double up and a $20 bounty tourney where I knocked out 7 bounties. I could not have asked for a better start for 2011 when it came to my lower stakes poker game!

So, to summarise, there is the meaning of my blog title I now have my mind set on Poker New year Happiness. I know that we can all set out to do something and DO IT! Manifest it and make it happen! That is my plan, just do it, zone myself and DO IT! 2011 is going to be a fabulous year for me in poker, I can feel it!

It is that time of year when we are all buying Christmas gifts and when it comes to poker players we can be a hard bunch to buy for! If you have already brought your poker playing partner, dad, friend or companion a large gift, keep in mind there are many poker products which will never grow old, be treasured and very handy for poker players of all limits that you can fill stockings with as a last minute Christmas gift idea!

It has a rolling ball on the top and a trigger, it cant be missed! It can be purchased and shipped in time for xmas at http://poker-mouse.com/ as you can see I alike a few others have mine!

There are countless amounts of books on the market. Poker Mathematics is always a favourite subject, people can go back and refer to it at any time. There are also some books that I have latched onto this year including Barry Shulmans 52 Tips For Texas Hold'em Poker, Larry Chiapelli's Chiapellis Live Poker Strategies, Tony Korfmans (this is as hilarious as hell) Texas Hold'em Poker, Gambling Balance by Linda Fitzgerald for those needing a good life balance and Joe Hachems pass the Sugar! Basically if you search the names of any of these you will find them!

There is always a subscription to a magazine which will make poker players happy. I love reading Poker News Magazine, Australian Poker Weekly and Poker Pro Mag! These will keep them happy for the rest of the year without a doubt!

Poker clothing is something poker players can never get enough of! This year I have added to my clothing pile from the following places: MITH Poker, PMS Poker Wear, Mean Green Poker, PokerGear.com.au. Between them all they have a fabulous range to suit everyone and anyone and it certainly beats wearing shirts that simply say a sites name!

Other considerations could be luggage, laptops and the like these however are far from stocking fillers! Good luck with your shopping – if you are buying for me, send none of the above as I obviously already have them – although more books and clothing I will never turn down nor will I turn down another game of online poker! ;-) :D

How to Get Bank Loans, Credit Cards and Renting Properties as a Poker Player

It was only 3 years ago when I had enough money to pay a nice deposit on a house for myself and my family. At the same time I was looking to rent a property and also wanting to change banks and get a new mastercard. I was doing it all at once, I don’t do things slowly. I came to a grinding halt though with the words poker player were placed on each application. The housing loan application was the first bust, followed by the rental application. This left me in tatters as I wondered where I would live??

I had made income as a poker player and used the funds to purchase and pay online, I had also withdrawn in large sums and then not at all. I realised I was a risk in the eyes of most rental companies and re-evaluated what I needed to do. The mastercard was no issue as I had a fabulous credit history with them. The other two issues were huge though.

I looked at the situation from the eyes of the leaser and also the mortgage brokers and banks. They wanted steady income showing and let’s face it, poker players have variance in their earnings. This is when I realised that alike everyone else I had to show a history of the same amount of weekly deposits into my account as well as savings. I changed the patterns of my banking; my cash outs and basically it worked. This is what you need to do:

Let’s say you have weeks where you win very little and others where you take down quite a few tourneys and grab yourself quite a few thousand. Leave the few thousands in your player account and withdraw a weekly income at the same time every single week. Withdrawing it all at once does not show the banks a stable income.

Let me use an example: I win $2000.00 in 1 week. I withdraw $500.00 only. The next week I may earn more but still; on the very same day (maybe a Wednesday) I withdraw the same amount; $500.00. I do this week after week after week. This shows a steady income of $500.00 net.

There is always going to be the question of taxation. The questions that you are going to face next are “Are you self employed?” The obvious answer is yes. Next question; “If you are self employed please provide your accounts details. I suggest that you take these figures to an account, pay him $80 for the year and have him available to advise that you have continually earned this money and IF you were liable to pay taxes your taxable income is (Whatever your cashouts sum to) but you are not, meaning your gross income for the year is (whatever it may add to.

This of course applies to Australia. There is a fine grey line when it comes to paying taxation on income from gambling. Check with the ATO (without giving your name for goodness sakes) on whether or not you would be liable; also speak to your accountant while you have the appointment with him. I am unaware of the laws for the UK, USA, Canada and European countries.

In saying all of the above, you can always cash out more as your require (above your selected weekly income) so long as you ensure you have the funds to cash out the same amount each week (or each month even) every time.

To those who win more each week than imaginable and could buy their own home in just a few months, this obviously does not apply to you, unless of course you are after a personal loan for a Ferrari lol, in which case work out your figures based on the loan requirements and be very careful and tread carefully around the accountant and the tax office.

The bottom line is; steady income is required for all of these things: rental, mortgages, car loans, master cards or anything relating to loans or hire purchase. Make sure you have a trail of that steady income before you attempt any of them.

Poker Tournament and Casino Travel Budget Style - SAVE!

We are always trying to save a buck no matter what we are doing. Hitting the poker tournament circle or taking a long distance trip to the casino we must do the same. Save a buck in every way possible! We can all go poker tournament tracking and hit the casinos based on our budget and save pennies no matter what they buy-ins, location or participants.

When travelling to our daily jobs, many of us car pool to save costs. To head to the casino the same method can be used. Don’t be shy to gather a full car of poker mates for the ride and split the costs equally! Pre-plan the trip in advance and get the numbers. You can also grab some last minute flight deals at budget price saving hundreds of dollars. There are also daily flight booking times where the same applies.

On arrival at your destination the same you can also save bucks! All you need is a place to crash (sleep) 6 players can easily share a $120 a night motel room crammed or not! Take a sleeping bag and be happy to sleep on the floor or even share a double bed with someone you rather wouldn’t! Maybe a friend already has a motel room and wants to buddy share? Network; look around at who is doing what.

Food and drinks can be a HUGE expense when travelling. We would all rather use our money more wisely at a Omaha or Texas Hold’em poker table! Pre-prepare and pack an esky. Ensure to pack food that doesn’t need to be cooked such as fruit, sandwiches and cold meat and salads. To save on mini bar costs take your own alcohol if you plan to drink. A 750ml bottle of spirits for less then $30 is a heck of a lot cheaper then 3 drinks from the mini bar. (This is of course if you plan to drink). You can empty the mini bar refridgerator on arrival placing the items in a safe spot and fill it with your own stuff.

Before you even hit the table you will be hundreds in front; and in front is what all poker players want to be! I hope my handy travel tips help those who are stepping out of the world of online poker into travel that they had never previously expected possible!

How do I know this? I have done it and are not ashamed to say so! Especially in my early days of being a poker journo! Save, save, save!

How to Never Lose Playing Poker! Cha Ching $$$$$$$

Wow! What an exciting week and a half for me on the electronic felt! Really I didn’t think I would have such a happy week / month even! As the saying goes: “When things are too good to be true, they usually are” but I found in my latest analysis that some things just don’t fit into this saying.

I usually play small buy in tourneys with very little prize money. It’s no surprise to anyone that I don’t have much of a bankroll - I don’t have time to build it back up. Small buy ins equate to small prize money $1 doesn’t get you far. The hours are stupid too. Play for 10 hours for $100 yep, great plan! (Sarcasm)

I was told weeks ago I didn’t have to spend big to win big and thought “Whatever!!!!!!!!!” Now I have to humbly eat my words and for once I am happy doing it! Yipppeee

This week I have won entry into 2 x $30,000.00 tournaments and 2 x $5,000.00 tournaments. I have also played in a $2,500.00 tournament and another for $1,500.00 and it cost me nothing to enter the satellites or the tourneys. Every week I have the opportunity to win this big cash now and of course I had to share my secret LOL.

I am playing for $100,000.00 minimum every month now!

Total cost to enter for the prize money has been only $49 for 3 months. I can afford $49 for 3 months especially if I cash up to $300,000.00 in those 3 months!

Subscription sites are the new way to win and I am glad I have found one. I can now NEVER LOSE at poker! NEVER, EVER, EVER! It’s brilliant for me! I am closing my laptop every single day happy as hell with my no fail performance. Closing it as I close in on the big bucks!

Test it out - $49 for 3 months with not just more than 300 hundred thousand bucks to play for – but also some fabulous prizes and a treaty of mates!
